Edward Lawrence Flynn Jr. Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Edward L. Flynn, Jr., 87, of Wethersfield and Old Saybrook, passed away on June 17, 2022 at St. Raphael Hospital after sustaining injuries from an incident. Edward was the son of Edward L. Flynn, Sr. and Jessie (Rhode) Flynn. He was a devoted husband of 66 years to his wife, Jacquelyn (Emonds) Flynn who predeceased him from COVID19. He is survived by his loving daughter and caregiver Lee-Ann Flynn of Old Saybrook. Ed enjoyed his daily, standing 11 o’clock visits with his daughter. The two of them shared an incredible bond as they grieved Jackie coping through the pandemic…all they needed was hope, and for that they had each other. He is also survived by a son Jeff (Peggy) and grandchildren, Nick and Lisa. His granddogs, Misha and Max, proved to be all the medicine he ever needed and provided him with much joy! Edward had beaten COVID and had been living with, what he referred to as “the trifecta”—congestive heart failure, Parkinson’s disease, and skin cancer. He never complained and overcame his obstacles with determination and grace. Ironically, it wasn’t any of the aforementioned conditions that claimed his life. Ed was born December 5, 1934 in East Hartford, but moved to Old Wethersfield/Wethersfield where he lived for 80 years. His love for the water came from living next to The Cove. He got his first boat at 8 years old and loved to share stories of the adventures he had throughout his youth. He was a 1952 graduate of Wethersfield High School where he was a star on the soccer field. He went on to serve in the Army National Guard. Edward’s fun spirit and quick wit served him well in his career as a salesman. He started out in the boat business working for the Weston Jenks and A. T. Howe companies. He moved on to Baumert Sales where he spent 41 years selling White, GMC, and Volvo trucks. He earned the Master Sales Leader Award two times. He quietly accepted each honor as “simply doing his job”. Ed and his family summered in Indian Town in Old Saybrook. He served on the ITA Board of Directors for over 20 years as head of security and social director. He earned the Bill Edgerton Service Award for his years of giving back to the community he loved. Ed and Jackie were communicants of Corpus Christi Church in Wethersfield where they attended daily mass for decades. When Ed became ill, he and Jackie moved into an area nursing home together. Ed quickly made himself part of the community. He became the Vice President and President of the Residents’ Council. His cheery disposition brightened everyone’s day. He kept active right until the end. Regardless of how busy his day was, Ed always made time to spend with his family. He came home every day throughout his career to take his wife out to lunch. He never missed one of his children’s activities. He made it to every sporting event, recital, chaperoned field trips, and coached little league. His work ethic and commitment to his family are his legacy. During his spare time, when he wasn’t out on a boat, Ed loved watching the Red Sox. When they won the World Series for the fourth time in his lifetime, Ed said that he could die a happy man! Ed’s life was celebrated at a private service per his request with full military honors. Ed’s high school yearbook quote read, “Ed Flynn leaves wise cracking!” Truer words were never spoken. Give ‘em hell in Heaven, Dad!
