April 2, 1922 - November 19, 2019
Fred Mikel Mekkelsen Jr., 97, of Kensington and Southington passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 19th to be joyfully reunited with his wife of 73 years Martha (Lemieux) Mekkelsen. Fred was born on April 2, 1922 in Barre, Vermont to Fred and Doris (Jones) Mekkelsen. Vermont was always a special place that Fred enjoyed returning to throughout his life. Fred joined the Navy in 1942 and was stationed in Chicago on the USS Sable. In July of 1943, he got a three-day pass and came home to marry his sweetheart, Martha. Shortly afterwards, he left for Midway Island to serve on the sub tender USS Aegir. He returned home at the end of WWII, proud to have served his country. Martha and Fred were residents of Kensington, CT, and parishioners of St. Paul’s Church for over 60 years. After his military service, Fred worked at the Brick Yard, at the Paper Goods Company, then as a postal carrier in Kensington and Berlin until his retirement 28 years later. Retirement meant time to enjoy fishing and deer hunting in Vermont, bingo and poker slots at the casino, and winters spent in Florida. ‘Freddie’ was a caring and beloved husband, father of 3, grandfather of 8, and great-grandfather of 15. His children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren each treasure special memories of him, his unique sense of humor, and his huge heart. He leaves his daughter Martha LaBrie (John), son Stephen Mekkelsen (Paula McNeill), grandchildren Kristen, Mikel, Jennifer, Kendra, Sherri, Nicole, Stephen, and Autumn, and many great grandchildren. Fred was predeceased by his wife, Martha, son Fred (Skip) III, brother, Thomas, and sister, Marie Burke. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, November 30th at the Rose Hill Funeral Home, 580 Elm St, Rocky Hill, CT. Calling hours will be 9-10:30 a.m., followed by services led by the Reverend Thomas Calderone. A full military burial will follow at noon. The family wishes to thank the staff at Southington Care Center and Mulberry Gardens for the excellent and compassionate care provided while Fred was in residence at those facilities. In lieu of flowers, donations in Fred’s memory may be sent to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or online at www.stjude.org.
