June 11, 1923 - April 19, 2019
Natalie Sherman (Child) Phillips, 95, a lifetime resident of Htfd and devoted wife for 59 yrs. of the late Donald M. Phillips, slipped peacefully into the arms of our Lord on Good Friday, Apr. 19, 2019 at Htfd Hospital. Born in this same hospital on June 11, 1923, she was the middle child and loving daughter of the late Irene (McCausland ) and Royal A. Child. ‘Nat’ was a proud graduate of Southwest (Kennelly) and Bulkeley High Schools (’40) and was employed at the Aetna Ins. Co. and Sage Allen Candy and GS Depts. She then worked for 25 yrs. as a fair, kind, and professional Adm. Asst. at BHS, retiring in 1988 with much fanfare and a day in her honor. Nat’s life was full and rich, particularly in the service of the Lord, Girl Scouting, and as Alumnae of BHS. Her beloved church was a second home and family to her throughout her life. As a member of Broadview Community Church for 80 yrs., Nat enjoyed singing in the choir for all of them, and for 40 yrs. directed the Handbell Choir. Her heart was always filled with a song. She held almost every volunteer position in the church including Pres. of the BCW and church clerk – some several times! For decades, Nat volunteered for the Htfd Larrabee Fund Assoc., was on the state Ex. Bd. of the CT Women of the UCC, and was a faithful delegate to the CTUCC Htfd Assoc. She was a ‘UCC Honored Woman’ in CT, (recognized nationally) and was the first woman to receive the Edward D. Turner, Jr. Spirit Award. Natalie was an active registered GS for 88 yrs., during which time she began Senior Troop 16 at Broadview and was the leader for 25 yrs., inspiring the love of camping in family members and generations of GS. She was a Troop Camping Trainer, Gold Award Advisor, and recipient of 2 ‘Thanks’ Badges. Bulkeley HS honored her in 2017 with a “Distinguished Alumni Award” for her yrs. of dedication to the school and active involvement with the Alumni Assoc. Nat’s great joys included singing, playing bridge, having lunch with friends, traveling, camping, vacationing at Clinton Beach and in Ocean Park/OOB ME, living at Avery Heights, and most especially, being with all of her friends and her family. She was a most loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and aunt. She leaves her devoted daughters Janet Machol (Dennis) of Newington, CT, Lois Tolis (Victor) of Worcester, MA; cherished granddaughters Julie M. Hughes (Jason) of Farmington, CT, Christine T. Johnston (Olan) of E. Longmeadow, MA., Diane Tolis (Jayne N.) of Hyde Park, MA., and 4 beautiful great-grandchildren Hannah and Carter H., Eleanor J., and Jonah N-T. She also leaves nephews John and Richard (Jan) Doyle and nieces Diane Hatheway and Eileen Fassione. Natalie was predeceased by her brother Theodore (Ted) Child and sister Hope Doyle. Special thanks are extended to Dr. Rhama Jhunja and to Dr. Ross Albert for their wonderful care and compassion. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM on Sun. May 5 at Broadview Community Church 45 Oliver St Hartford, CT.
